12 Free Fall Printables

Looking for an easy, inexpensive way to decorate for fall?  How about an autumn-inspired print for your bookshelf, end table or wherever else in your home that could use some seasonal flair?  MyBlessedLife.net has 12 free fall printables to choose from.  I think this one below is my favorite.

My friend on Facebook, Kathie, used this print in her home and I think it looks adorable.

I’m spending my Saturday morning enjoying honey dip donuts with coffee and reading the November issue of Real Simple while Jon works on some homework.  Oh yes, and we are listening to some piano music on the record player.  I am officially feelin’ the holiday cheer this morning.  It almost makes me want to bake something – almost.

Real Men Sew Sweaters on Flower Print Couches

IMG_1722IMG_1730IMG_1732IMG_1733IMG_1746IMG_1747

I think I have the cutest husband in the whole wide world!

A couple months ago I found the sweetest little peach sweater on Clearance at Old Navy.  It was only $2.89 because it had two little tiny holes in it; one in the front and one in the back.  So I bought it and a few weeks later the front side hole had grown.  I tried to stitch it up myself, but it looked ridiculous.  So Jon, being the Mr. Fix-It that he is, said he would take a crack at it.

And his stitching turned out pretty good!

After a few more weeks, the back hole had grown to about a nickel size, so once again I asked my amazing, manly husband if he would get out his sewing kit.

It took him a couple weeks to get around to it since he’s been busy with studying, but last night after dinner he sat down to do it.

We were in the middle of talking about something when he looked up and said, “I’m sitting on a flower couch sewing.  What does that make me?”

“I don’t know,” I said.

Then we went back to talking about whatever we were talking about before.

Oh and actually I just got this great couch for $15 last week at a thrift store!  I know, I know, we checked it out for bed bugs and rented one of those upholstery shampooers and spent Sunday afternoon shampooing it five times over.  (And I’m not sure why my camera keeps making all my pictures look yellow.  I really need to take a photography class or something.  The couch is actually off-white with pink and blue flowers.)

I had decided last week that we needed to rearrange our living room and replace one of the chairs with a couch to make the space more comfortable for having guests over.  Then the very next day I found this gem!

Jon didn’t really want us to get it for many good reasons, but I really liked it!

We may eventually get a slip cover for it, but for now I’m kind of digging the the whole retro-gramdma-shabby-chic look it’s got going on!  Now all we need is a sweet record player to put on a narrow table behind it (Jon’s idea) and we will be ready to entertain folks in our oh-so-hipster apartment.

I JUST learned what “hipster” meant a week ago.  How am I so behind the times???

The Hunt For A Fashionable, Modest Swimsuit

For over a year now I have been actively searching for the perfect one-piece or tankini swimsuit.  You may wonder why this search has gone on for so long.  Well, where do I even start?

I’ll start with the size issue.  For one, 99% of all places that sell one-piece swimsuits only make them in size 6 and up.  This means that I have a very small chance of finding the perfect suit to begin with.  And what kind of prejudice is that anyway?  I’m not complaining about my size, but I’m complaining about the fact that if you are on the “skinny side” it is entirely impossible to find a cute, modest suit…until now - I’ll get to that in a moment.

Secondly, the prices.  There are a few places that sell cute one pieces, but the amount they are asking you to spend on a rather small amount of material that you will likely wear for 3ish years (or probably less) before it gets ruined, faded, lost or just outdated is ridiculous.  I don’t know about you but I am not looking to spend between $150 – $200+ on a swimsuit.  I have bills to pay.

Lastly, most of the one-piece swimsuits I’ve come across are much too speedo-ish.  This is a problem because in a speedo with my hair slicked back I happen to closely resemble a 16 year old boy in a singlet dressed for a high school wrestling match.  Yeah, not exactly what I’m going for.

BUT…I have been SO PLEASED to see that this year modest swimwear is making a comeback!  Hallelujah!  And not only is it modest, but the trend seems to be bringing back retro-fit suits like the ones that were popular in the 1960′s.  We’re talkin’ ruffles, swim-skirts, and high waisted glory.

Finally, I will be able to go to the beach or the pool feeling cute and confident rather than wondering if I’m exposing too much skin or feeling uncomfortable having to wear a tank top and board shorts over my bikini when it’s 90 degrees outside.

So here are some of my favorite finds for this season.  They are fun, feminine, decently priced and they come in a good range of sizes: generally XS-XL.  So enjoy!

My overall favorite online site: DownEast BasicsThey sell tops and bottoms seperate so there’s the ability to mix ‘n match sizes and patterns.  love.  The styles are oh so feminine and fashionable.  And they give you a lot of coverage without being frumpy.  The tops sell for $32.99 and the bottoms for $22.99 each.

I can’t decide between this one…

Or this one…

What do you think?

Oh and I love this one too…

I also like…

Victoria’s Secret, $100

Urban Outfitters, $89

Forever 21, $19.80

I’m not sure I’m crazy about the whole Monokini fad, but for $20 if you like it, it’s a great deal!

Good luck finding your perfect suit for this summer!

Flipped

I love movies with intriguing characters and a good enough storyline that all the Hollywood pizazz isn’t really needed.  I watched the 2010 movie Flipped today and it was seriously charming to say the least.  I never lived through the late 50′s or early 60′s, but nonetheless this movie made me miss that era.

The story is told from both the boy and the girl viewpoints, shifting from one to the other in a “he said/she said” format  And without giving too much away, I think it was fun to watch every middle school girl’s wish actually come true between these two adorable kids.  Loved it.  [insert 1950's Doo-Wop here]

Pretty Little Things

I made my frist Etsy purchase today!  You know when you buy something really, really cute and you just have to tell somebody about it!?  Well, my husband really cares about me, but he can only get so excited about things like lovely little hair accessories.  So I’m telling you!  Plus, he will see it on our bank statement anyway.

I’ve been contemplating buying something from Pretty Pink House for a while now.  I went to college with Callie, the creative hand and mind behind these pieces.  She has a blog called My Life In Mixed Media where she shares about the creative stuff she makes.  I get jealous when I read her blog.  Not jealous in the bad kind of way, but more like I stare in bewilderment at her masterpieces and think, “How in the world did she come up with that?…If only I knew how to sew…”

So thank you Callie for inspiring me and I’ll thank you in advance for making my head more fashionable with these adorable hair pins!

I almost bought the broach too, but I mustered up some self control.

Don’t you just love cute, original little things like this?  I do, and I can’t wait to get my package in the mail!

Printable Alphabet Bunting

My FAVORITE craft idea right now are these alphabet letters from Ruffled blog.

These downloads are absolutely FREE and they work for so many occasions!  I just made a banner for a friend who recently had a baby and I made one that says “Happy Easter” for the pancake breakfast I’m throwing tomorrow morning.  I wasn’t even sure I wanted to share about them because I kind of like having some crafty secret-weapons, but hey, it’s nice to share!

And the winner is…

Meet my 9 year-old neighbor Jaillyn.  She will be picking the winning egg.  If this post wasn’t titled “And the winner is…” it would most definitely be called “My neighbor is cuter than your neighbor.”  But really, isn’t she adorable?!

Here she goes!

Congratulations Jessica S. ~ You are the winner of the one-year subscription to Real Simple magazine!  Please send me the name and mailing address via Facebook of who you would like this subscription sent to.

Fine print: all entries were placed in randomly selected egg colors and random placement within the bucket.  I was unaware of Jaylene’s color preference.  Also, she said she had a good day today, so she was feeling especially fair.  Thank you to everyone who entered!

Controlling the Remotes

The problem:  I started noticing it a few months into our marriage.  Of all the books I read about the differences between men and women, I was never adequately prepared to deal with the plethora of remote controls that threatened to take over my coffee table and my life.

Jon assured me that it wasn’t that he didn’t care, but rather that it was a biological difference between us.  God had made space in my brain to care about things like the remotes being put away at the end of a day, while Jon hadn’t been so blessed, or cursed, depending on how you look at it.  But I still needed to find a solution to the clutter.

The Solution:  Mod Podge, playing cards, and a $2 tray I found at the Goodwill.

I love crafts, but I tend to gravitate more toward what I find easy to make.  Mod Podge is easy.  It’s fun.  And you need no skill whatesoever.  My kind of craft!

So, I painted the sides of the tray with some red paint.  Then, I covered the bottom of the tray with Mod Podge before laying down the playing cards.  Next, I covered the tops of the playing cards with more Mod Podge, creating a smooth, thick layer of Modge Podge over the cards.  Finally, I grabbed a cold Diet Coke from the fridge and waited for my masterpiece to dry.

Once it was dry, I lovingly placed the four remotes into their new home.  They smiled, because they knew from now on they wouldn’t get lost between the couch cushions.

And we all lived happily ever after!
