Still On The Hunt For Modest, Fashionable Swimsuits

A little while back I posted about my Hunt For a Modest, Fashionable Swimsuit.  Well, today one of my best friends, Jessica Carroll, sent me a picture text of her new swimsuit and it was yes, modest, fashionable AND just plain stinkin’ adorable!  So I figured I would share her awesome find with you in case you’re still on the hunt yourself!

Jessica bought this suit pictured below.  It’s called the Beach Blanket Bingo One Piece in Red.  Long name.  It’s $89 from Mod Cloth.  Um wow!  Right?  The retro style reminds me of the character Senora Webster from one of my favorite childhood movies, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken.  Classic.

And the same style in Daze-y One Piece – Plus Size.

Some of my other favorites from Mod Cloth are the Bathing Beauty One Piece in Black.

Or the Bathing Beauty One Piece in Cherry Pie.

And then we have the Yesteryear Glam One Piece.  Although this one will cost you a bit more at $127.

So there you have it!  More modest, fashionable swimwear that will no doubt look good on many different body types!

Ya know, I’m starting to think I should get paid by these companies for promoting their products to all my friends, don’t you think?

The Hunt For A Fashionable, Modest Swimsuit

For over a year now I have been actively searching for the perfect one-piece or tankini swimsuit.  You may wonder why this search has gone on for so long.  Well, where do I even start?

I’ll start with the size issue.  For one, 99% of all places that sell one-piece swimsuits only make them in size 6 and up.  This means that I have a very small chance of finding the perfect suit to begin with.  And what kind of prejudice is that anyway?  I’m not complaining about my size, but I’m complaining about the fact that if you are on the “skinny side” it is entirely impossible to find a cute, modest suit…until now - I’ll get to that in a moment.

Secondly, the prices.  There are a few places that sell cute one pieces, but the amount they are asking you to spend on a rather small amount of material that you will likely wear for 3ish years (or probably less) before it gets ruined, faded, lost or just outdated is ridiculous.  I don’t know about you but I am not looking to spend between $150 – $200+ on a swimsuit.  I have bills to pay.

Lastly, most of the one-piece swimsuits I’ve come across are much too speedo-ish.  This is a problem because in a speedo with my hair slicked back I happen to closely resemble a 16 year old boy in a singlet dressed for a high school wrestling match.  Yeah, not exactly what I’m going for.

BUT…I have been SO PLEASED to see that this year modest swimwear is making a comeback!  Hallelujah!  And not only is it modest, but the trend seems to be bringing back retro-fit suits like the ones that were popular in the 1960′s.  We’re talkin’ ruffles, swim-skirts, and high waisted glory.

Finally, I will be able to go to the beach or the pool feeling cute and confident rather than wondering if I’m exposing too much skin or feeling uncomfortable having to wear a tank top and board shorts over my bikini when it’s 90 degrees outside.

So here are some of my favorite finds for this season.  They are fun, feminine, decently priced and they come in a good range of sizes: generally XS-XL.  So enjoy!

My overall favorite online site: DownEast BasicsThey sell tops and bottoms seperate so there’s the ability to mix ‘n match sizes and patterns.  love.  The styles are oh so feminine and fashionable.  And they give you a lot of coverage without being frumpy.  The tops sell for $32.99 and the bottoms for $22.99 each.

I can’t decide between this one…

Or this one…

What do you think?

Oh and I love this one too…

I also like…

Victoria’s Secret, $100

Urban Outfitters, $89

Forever 21, $19.80

I’m not sure I’m crazy about the whole Monokini fad, but for $20 if you like it, it’s a great deal!

Good luck finding your perfect suit for this summer!

Pretty Little Things

I made my frist Etsy purchase today!  You know when you buy something really, really cute and you just have to tell somebody about it!?  Well, my husband really cares about me, but he can only get so excited about things like lovely little hair accessories.  So I’m telling you!  Plus, he will see it on our bank statement anyway.

I’ve been contemplating buying something from Pretty Pink House for a while now.  I went to college with Callie, the creative hand and mind behind these pieces.  She has a blog called My Life In Mixed Media where she shares about the creative stuff she makes.  I get jealous when I read her blog.  Not jealous in the bad kind of way, but more like I stare in bewilderment at her masterpieces and think, “How in the world did she come up with that?…If only I knew how to sew…”

So thank you Callie for inspiring me and I’ll thank you in advance for making my head more fashionable with these adorable hair pins!

I almost bought the broach too, but I mustered up some self control.

Don’t you just love cute, original little things like this?  I do, and I can’t wait to get my package in the mail!

The Place For Fashion Advice

One thing that is unfortunate about living in this quaint little city on the California Coast is this:  the closest Nordstrom is approximately 2 hours away.  Good for my bank account, bad for my closet.

However I recently discovered that Nordstrom’s Junior section called BP started producing some great short videos online that feature some of the latest trends and advice on how to wear them.  The current videos include topics like Wearing Boots Year Round, Skirts Trends We Love, Interview Outfits and Perfect Casual Looks.

You can find these videos on the Junior’s page of the Nordstrom website.  Only caution: you need to be tolerant of people who speak fluent Laguna Beach.  (If you have ever seen Whitney Port from The Hills on TV you know exactly what I’m talking about.)

It’s a great resource if you’re like me and only manage to be fashion forward when you successfully copy someone else’s style.  Also, if you see something you like you can order it online from Nordstrom or take a mental note and try and find something similar for a better deal at Nordstrom Rack, Gap, Target, or a second-hand clothing store.

Happy watching!
